1. What Transfer Credit is
ⓘ Transfer Credit is a promotional top-up of extra rupees on your first $2,000 sent to your own NRO account — it isn’t money you hold.
Transfer Credit is a promotional benefit. When it applies, your recipient NRO account receives more rupees than it would have received for the same transfer without the credit. The extra amount is calculated as a percentage of the US dollar amount you send (the “credit rate”).
The standard credit rate is 0.5%. Some promotional codes or offers carry a credit rate of 1%. The credit applies to a combined total of up to $2,000 of eligible transfers per customer (your “credit allowance”). Amounts you send beyond your remaining allowance don’t receive the credit.
Transfer Credit is not a deposit, a balance, stored value, cash, a gift card or a payment instrument. It exists only as a feature of an eligible transfer.
2. Who can get Transfer Credit
ⓘ Transfer Credit is a limited offer — we decide who is offered it, and having seen it before doesn’t guarantee you’ll get it again.
Our discretion
Transfer Credit is a limited promotion and isn’t automatically available to every customer. To the extent the law allows, we may offer, withhold, limit, change, pause or end Transfer Credit for particular customers, groups of customers, campaigns, time periods or types of transfer.
Seeing an offer before — in the app, by email, in an ad, in a notification or on a past transfer — doesn’t guarantee you’re eligible now or in the future.
What you need
To receive Transfer Credit, you must:
- have an active Xpat account in good standing;
- have completed identity verification and every compliance check we require;
- send an eligible transfer (section 4) to an eligible Self NRO account (section 3);
- meet any conditions attached to your particular offer or code; and
- follow these terms, our Terms of Service and the law.
We may decide a customer is ineligible, delay a transfer, withhold or cancel a credit, or remove a customer from an offer for fraud-prevention, compliance, legal, security, risk, operational or business reasons.
3. What counts as your own NRO account
ⓘ The NRO account must be in India and in the same legal name as you, and we have to be able to verify that.
A Self NRO account is a Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) rupee account at a bank in India that is held in the same legal name as the sender, as shown on your verified Xpat identity. We may ask for information to confirm that the account is yours, and an account counts only once we’re satisfied it meets this definition.
Joint accounts don’t qualify unless we confirm in writing, before you authorize the transfer, that a particular joint account is eligible.
4. Eligible transfers
ⓘ Only a completed Prime transfer from the US to your own NRO account can earn Transfer Credit.
Transfer Credit can apply only to a transfer that meets all of these conditions:
- it is sent from the United States to India in US dollars and paid out in Indian rupees;
- you are both the sender and the recipient (a “self transfer”);
- the recipient account is your Self NRO account;
- it is sent using the Prime delivery option;
- the credit is shown in the transfer details before you confirm (and, where the app asks you to, you selected it);
- it is made before your Transfer Credit expires (section 8); and
- it completes successfully and passes our transaction, compliance and operational checks.
5. Transfers that don’t qualify
ⓘ Transfers to NRE accounts, UPI, other people, or anything that fails or is reversed get no credit.
Transfer Credit does not apply to:
- transfers to your own NRE account or any other non-NRO account;
- transfers to a UPI ID, including your own;
- transfers to anyone else’s account, including another person’s NRO or NRE account;
- transfers sent with Standard, Express or any delivery option other than Prime;
- joint accounts, unless we confirmed eligibility in writing beforehand (section 3);
- US dollar transfers of any kind, including Cash Plus Account transfers, pay by phone, Circles contributions, withdrawals and bank-to-bank transfers;
- transfers that are cancelled, rejected, returned, reversed, refunded or disputed, or that otherwise don’t complete;
- transfers made after your Transfer Credit has expired or after the program ends; and
- transfers where you didn’t select the credit before confirming, if the app asked you to.
Our decision on whether a transfer is eligible is final, subject to applicable law.
6. The credit is shown before you confirm
ⓘ Whatever credit the app shows before you confirm is the credit that applies — and 0% or nothing shown means no credit.
Before you authorize an eligible transfer, the app shows the transfer details required by law — including the exchange rate, any fees, the total you pay, the amount you send and the amount your NRO account is expected to receive — along with the Transfer Credit, if any.
The credit rate shown at that point is the one that applies to that transfer, as long as the transfer completes and you continue to meet these terms. A credit rate of 0%, or no credit shown at all, means no Transfer Credit applies to that transfer. We won’t add a credit afterwards to a transfer that didn’t show one.
Transfer Credit doesn’t guarantee a particular exchange rate, rupee amount, delivery time, approval or completion. The exchange rate, fees and expected delivery for each transfer are those in the disclosures shown before you confirm.
7. How the credit is calculated
ⓘ Your credit is the dollar amount sent (up to what’s left of your $2,000) times the rate shown, paid as extra rupees.
For each eligible transfer:
Transfer Credit = eligible amount × credit rate shown before you confirm, converted to rupees at that transfer’s exchange rate.
The eligible amount is the lower of the US dollar amount you send and your remaining credit allowance. Once you have used the full $2,000 allowance, later transfers don’t receive Transfer Credit.
Because the allowance is $2,000, the most Transfer Credit can be worth is the rupee equivalent of $10 at 0.5%, or $20 at 1%.
| Example | Amount sent | Credit rate | Credit (in rupees, at the transfer’s rate) | Allowance left |
|---|
| First transfer | $1,500 | 0.5% | The rupee value of $7.50 | $500 |
| Second transfer | $1,000 | 0.5% | The rupee value of $2.50 (only $500 was left) | $0 |
| Third transfer | $800 | — | None | $0 |
The table is an illustration only. The actual rupee amount depends on the exchange rate shown for each transfer.
9. No cash value
ⓘ You can only use Transfer Credit on an eligible transfer — never as cash.
Transfer Credit has no cash value. It can’t be withdrawn, paid out, refunded, sold, gifted, assigned, transferred to another person or credited to a wallet, Cash Plus Account or bank account, and it can’t be used for anything other than an eligible transfer under these terms. Unused or expired allowance isn’t paid out in any form.
Having Transfer Credit available doesn’t mean a transfer will be approved or completed. Every transfer remains subject to our compliance, risk, operational, partner and legal requirements.
10. Reversals and clawback
ⓘ If a transfer is reversed, refunded or returned, or the credit was given by mistake or through misuse, we can take the credit back.
If a transfer that received Transfer Credit is cancelled, refunded, returned or reversed — for example because the ACH payment that funded it was returned, disputed or found to be unauthorized — the credit for that transfer is void.
If the extra rupees have already been paid to your NRO account, you owe us the value of that credit. To the extent the law allows, we may recover it by deducting it from a refund owed to you, from your Cash Plus Account or any other balance you hold with us, or from future transfers, or by asking you to repay it. We may also recover a credit applied in error.
Whether a cancelled transfer restores any of your credit allowance is up to us.
11. Fraud and misuse
ⓘ Trying to game Transfer Credit can lose you the credit, your account, or both.
Transfer Credit is meant for genuine transfers to your own account. If we reasonably believe you have tried to misuse it, we may disqualify you, cancel or reverse any credit, recover credit already paid (section 10), and restrict or close your account under our Terms of Service. Misuse includes:
- opening or using more than one account, or using another person’s identity or details;
- giving false, inaccurate or misleading information, including about who owns the recipient account;
- sending transfers mainly to obtain a promotion rather than for a genuine remittance purpose, including round-tripping money;
- splitting, structuring or arranging transfers to get around transfer, account or eligibility limits;
- sharing, selling or publishing codes meant for you alone; and
- anything else that breaks these terms, our Terms of Service or the law.
Suspicious activity may lead to extra review, delays, refusal of a transfer, account restrictions, and reports to authorities where the law requires.
12. Changes, suspension and ending the program
ⓘ We can change or end Transfer Credit, but not for a transfer you’ve already confirmed.
To the extent the law allows, we may change the credit rate, the allowance, eligibility rules, limits, availability or any other part of Transfer Credit at any time, and we may pause or end the program for legal, regulatory, security, fraud-prevention, operational or business reasons.
A change won’t alter the disclosures for a transfer you have already authorized and we have accepted. We’ll tell you about material changes in the app, on our website, by email or another reasonable way.
13. Other terms and contact
ⓘ These terms sit alongside our main Terms of Service and don’t take away your legal rights.
These terms don’t change our Terms of Service, the disclosures for your transfers, your error-resolution and cancellation rights (see Refunds, cancellations & errors), our Privacy Policy or any right you have that the law doesn’t allow to be waived. Disputes about Transfer Credit are handled under the dispute-resolution terms in our Terms of Service.
Taxes: you’re responsible for any tax that applies to you because of Transfer Credit.
